While most of the chemicals remain the same in the chemistry of ASME SA276 grade 316l rod, what makes it so unique is that the alloy has a very low content of carbon. To be precise, the maximum permitted content of carbon in the alloy of the ASTM A479 type 316l hex bar ranges about 0.030%. And this solely is the reason why welding the alloy is possible. Unlike the conventional grade 316, the a276 type 316l rod is not prone to sensitization, nor is it prone to intergranular corrosion. Thus one can expect high quality welds from grade 316L. 

Essentially like grade 316, the ASTM a276 grade 316l round bar can be welded with ease using conventional welding techniques without the use of heat treatment prior to welding. In order to stabilize the austenitic microstructure of SS 316l rod, similar to grade 316, nickel and molybdenum are added to its alloy. However, it is important to note that the alloy tends to become weaker with the lowering of carbon content. Hence to increase its strength the 316l Stainless Steel flat bar has added nitrogen in its alloy.  Although adding nitrogen to the alloy may not make it as strong as grade 316, the tensile properties are in a similar vicinity.

What are manufacturing methods to make ASTM a276 type 316L stainless steel round bars?

The a276 316L round bars are produced through hot rolling, cold rolling, hot forging, rolling or machining methods. Each of these methods has different advantages for certain types of applications. There are also different finishes available for these round bars. They could either be black, bright polished, matt finish, BA finish, No 4 finish or rough turned.
