Carriage Bolt: Flat Head, Square Neck | ||
---|---|---|
Description | A flat head bolt with a bearing surface that is countersunk to a 150 degree angle. Although flat, the head has a measurable side height causing it to protrude above its mating surface when it is completely tightened. Directly below the head is a square neck and a threaded section that has a unified thread pitch. | |
Applications | The square neck design keeps the bolt from turning as a nut is tightened. The flat head feature gives a lower profile on the front or top side of the fastening than a round head carriage bolt. Designed specifically, but not exclusively for the garage door industry. | |

Raaj Sagar Steels is the step bolts supplier and manufacturer in India. We offers associated products of step bolts for application in the structural steel industry and automobile industry. The step bolts can be finishing with a broad range of coatings, such as zinc plated, black oxide, chrome. Customized needs and OEM solutions are welcome.
The step bolts are more durable and provide easy installation. The coating finish reduces friction for easy installation and protects from rust. If you have interested in our step bolts, please do not hesitate to contact us via the inquiry form.
Product FeatureStep bolts are literally used as steps on steel communication and electrical transmission towers. These bolts are generally provided with two. One nut is tightened against the thread run out. The unthreaded shank, or step length, typically ranges from 6" to 10".
Step Bolts are similar to Carriage Bolts in that they both have a square shoulder and a larger bearing surface. Step bolts, however have a larger and lower-profile round head creating a smooth surface. The larger head also makes it more difficult to be pulled through soft materials it is usually applied to. Plain finish, or bare metal, may or may not have a coating of light oil to resist corrosion.

Tap Bolts
Hex Tap bolts, also known as fully-threaded hex bolts, feature a pointed end. They are designed to be used in a drilled or tapped hole where a cap screw or stud would be impractical, and they are useful in a variety of automotive and industrial applications. Raaj Sagar Steels supplies grades 2, 5, 8 and stainless steel tap bolts. Stainless steel tap bolts are made from 18-8 stainless steel and used in environments corrosive to carbon steel.
Grade 2, 5, and 8 Tap Bolts
Grade 2 Tap Bolts: A low carbon, hex head bolt with a machined point and fully threaded. Grade-2 tap bolts are made from AISI 1006 – 1025 or equivalent steel, and to be used in drilled and tapped holes that are threaded full length. They can be used instead of a stud or nut.
Grade 5 Tap Bolts: A fully threaded hex bolt made from AISI -1541 or equivalent medium carbon steel and heat treated. 4037 modified steel (alloy) is also acceptable. Grade-5 tap bolts are commonly used to mount motors to machinery or other automotive applications.
Grade 8 Tap Bolts: A tap bolt made from medium carbon alloy and heat treated. Grade-8 tap bolts are used in automotive and fleet industries where greater tensile strength is required that can be met by the Grade-5 bolt.

Machine bolts are used to fasten wood to wood, wood to metal and metal to metal. Similar to a hex cap screw, a machine bolt will differ in these four ways: its point will not be chamfered or rounded; it will be available in larger sizes (diameters); it will not have an underhead washer bearing surface; and it will be manufactured to less exacting standards. Depending on head style, machine bolts are also known as:
They are used with nuts and internally threaded (tapped) holes.
Threads are standard right-hand and often Unified inch coarse series (UNC, Unified National Coarse). Short lengths are fully threaded while longer lengths follow a standard formula: for bolts 6" and shorter, the minimum threaded length is two times the basic thread diameter plus 1/4", and for lengths greater than 6", two times the diameter plus 1/2".
Typically, machine bolt sizes range from 1/4" to 1 1/4" for square heads and 3/8" to 1 3/4" in diameter for hex heads, and lengths span from about 3/4" to 18" for square and 6 1/2" to 24" for hex heads. Measure length from under the head to the threaded end of the bolt.
Both square and hex heads are available. The size of the head varies with the size of the machine bolt. Since it is externally wrenched, sufficient space around the head must be allowed for wrench clearance. Tables 1 and 2 list head width across flats, which is wrench size, and across corners, head height and minimum threaded length.
Machine bolts are available in Grade 2. Steel is the standard material, and plain finish, which lacks a surface treatment to inhibit rust, is common.
When installing in wood, drill holes no more than 1/16" larger than the bolt size. If you drill into an untreated area of treated lumber, saturate the hole with a preservative to prevent the migration of decay fungi. In addition, always use a large diameter washer under the head and nut to distribute clamping force over a larger area and to minimize compression of the wood. Bolts should be retightened after about a year then checked yearly for tightness.
Machine and lag bolts are the preferred fasteners for fastening heavy wood members in structures. Machine bolts, in comparison to lag bolts, offer increased rigidity and load-carrying capacity but require a through-hole and access to both sides of the joint for wrenching the head and nut. Lag bolts, despite their lower lateral strength, are useful when access to one side of the joint is limited, the appearance of a nut is undesirable or through-bolt length is excessive. When compared to carriage bolts, machine bolts are available in larger sizes and are often preferable because carriage bolts are not designed to accept a washer under their head. However, carriage bolts are available in hot dip galvanized and stainless steel types.
Refer to American Society of Mechanical Engineers Standard ASME B18.2.1, Square and Hex Bolts and Screws, for specifications relating to machine bolts.

Plow Bolt - Pin
This plow bolt has a smooth flat countersunk head with a small square section underneath that locks into the surface when tightened. Termed a plow bolt because they were originally used on the manufacturing of plows. We carry a wide variety of diameters and lengths. Please visit our secure on-line store for prices and sizes. Grade 5 plow bolts are used in road graders, scoop shovels and other heavy duty equipment where a smooth surface is required.
We Stock: 3/8-16, 7/16-14, 1/2-13, 5/8-11
Plow bolts date back to about 1850 and are used to attach the plow share (blade) to the frog (frame) and allow earth to pass over their heads without obstruction to the moldboard. They are also used to fasten the blade to bulldozers and motor graders. Plow bolts have a small round countersunk head and a square neck—the width of the square (measured across the flats) is the same size as the nominal diameter of the bolt. The top of the head can be flat (for plows) or dome (convex) shaped (for dozers/graders); the conical (tapered) bearing surface of a plow bolt is 80°.
Threads are standard right-hand and Unified inch coarse series (UNC, Unified National Coarse). Short lengths are fully threaded while longer lengths follow a standard formula: the minimum threaded length is two times the basic bolt diameter plus 1/4".
Typical plow bolt sizes range from 3/8" to 3/4" in diameter for flat heads and 5/8" to 1" for dome heads. Depending on size, lengths span from about 1" to 4" for flat heads and 1 1/2" to 7" for dome heads. For flat heads, length is measured from the top of the head to the threaded end of the bolt; for dome heads, measure length from the largest diameter point of the head (where the dome top meets the conical bearing surface) to the extreme end of the bolt.
The size of the head varies with the size of the bolt. Table 1 lists head diameter, depth of square and head, square neck width and minimum threaded length of #3 flat head plow bolts.
Grade 5, steel, zinc plated, and Grade 8, steel, yellow zinc plated, are common grades, material and finishes.

a The tolerance class specified applies before hot-dip galvanising. Hot-dip galvanised bolts are intended for assembly with oversize tapped nuts. b The location of chappy V-notch test pieces in the bolt shall be specified in EN ISO 898-1. c Attention is drawn to the need to consider the risk of hydrogen embrittlement in the case of bolts of property class 10.9, when selecting an appropriate surface treatment process (e.g. cleaning and coating), see the relevant coating standards. d “As processed” means the normal finish resulting from manufacture with a light coating of oil. e Other coatings may be negotiated between the purchaser and the manufacturer provided they do not impair the mechanical properties or the functional characteristics. Coatings of cadmium or cadmium alloy are not permitted. |
Preloaded bolted assemblies are very sensitive to differences in manufacture and lubrication. Therefore it is important that the assembly is supplied by one manufacturer who is always responsible for the function of the assembly. For the same reason, it is important that the coating of the assembly is under the control of one manufacturer. Beside the mechanical properties of the components, the functionality of the assembly requires that the specific preload can be achieved if the assembly is tightened with a suitable procedure. For this purpose a test method for the suitability of the components for preloading was created, which will demonstrate whether the function of the assembly is fulfilled.
